Introduction to Multilayer Cosmetic Tubes and Their Main Applications
2025-12-11Cosmetic and personal care tubes are widely used across skincare, haircare, and medical-related products due to their portability, good sealing performance, and overall user-friendly design. To meet the needs of different formulations, tubes are commonly made in mono-layer, double-layer, triple-layer, and five-layer structures. Among them, multilayer tubes—especially those with barrier layers—are the preferred choice for premium and sensitive formulas.
1. Mono-Layer TubeStructure: Made from a single layer of plastic (commonly PE).
Main Applications:
Stable formulas that are not easily oxidized
Daily personal care products such as facial cleansers, hand creams, and body lotions
Advantages: Cost-effective, flexible, and versatile in appearance
Limitations: Low barrier performance; not suitable for sensitive or highly active formulas
Structure: An added protective layer increases strength and durability.
Main Applications:
Mild skincare formulas with slightly sensitive ingredients
Light serums or cleansing products
Advantages: Stronger than mono-layer tubes and provides more stable appearance
Limitations: Barrier properties remain limited for high-activity ingredients
Structure: Typically consists of an inner layer, an outer layer, and a functional middle layer (often EVOH).
Main Applications:
Products containing fragrance, essential oils, or active ingredients
Premium haircare and basic skincare products
Advantages: Enhanced barrier properties that help extend product shelf life
Limitations: Higher cost than mono- and double-layer tubes
Structure: Common layers include: Outer layer / Adhesive layer / Barrier layer (EVOH) / Adhesive layer / Inner layer.
This is the most widely used structure for higher-end or sensitive formulas.
Main Applications:
Highly active skincare (whitening, anti-aging, AHA/BHA, etc.)
Formulas that are volatile, oxidation-sensitive, or light-sensitive
Products containing medical-grade or sensitive ingredients requiring strong protection
Advantages:
Excellent barrier performance against oxygen, fragrance loss, and moisture
Superior formula protection and stability
Extended shelf life
Limitations: Highest cost among tube structures; more complex manufacturing
Strong barrier protection against oxygen, UV light, and moisture
Protects active ingredients and extends shelf life
Maintains fragrance and formula stability
Higher mechanical strength and improved shape retention
Ideal for mid- to high-end skincare brands
The number of layers in a cosmetic tube affects not only its appearance but also the safety, stability, and shelf life of the product inside. When selecting a tube type, brands should consider their formula sensitivity, active ingredients, transportation needs, and market positioning. Whether mono-layer or five-layer, multilayer tubes provide professional and reliable protection for a wide range of personal care products.
